How did you get into soap making?

We owe much of our decision to begin this soap making journey to Katie Carson and her Youtube channel, Royalty Soaps. (Look her up! She’s amazing!) Rachel and I both found her independently and enjoyed her videos on soap making. One day, Carissa told Rachel she should watch one of these videos, and Rachel replied that she had been following Katie for a while and was seriously wanting to try cold process soap making because of her! Rachel had tried making soap with melt and pour soap base many times before. Carissa jumped in head first and they both learned all they could about the process and things they would need to get started. Katie’s Royal Academy videos were a great help in getting started, as were the Soap Queen, Anne-Marie, who owns Brambleberry, a soap-making supply company. We figured we needed something to do with all the soap we would be making, and Carissa’s husband had always wanted to help someone start a business, so we took the crazy plunge into becoming small business owners and have learned and grown so much through it all. Being able to create a beautiful bar of soap is so rewarding, and we’re still totally loving it!

What ingredients do you use?

Usually we use some combination of the following in our soap: Olive Oil, Pure Coconut Oil, Water, Organic and Sustainably Grown Palm Oil, Lye (sodium hydroxide), Organic Sweet Almond Oil, Castor Oil, Fragrance oil, Skin-Safe Colorants (pigments or ethical mica powders). Occasionally we use small amounts of things like whole grain oats, glycerin or melt and pour soap (to created decorations inside or on top of the soap bar), activated charcoal powder, and biodegradable eco-friendly glitter.
See individual bars for the full ingredients list for any particular bar of soap.

Are your soaps organic/all natural/vegan?

At this time we do not offer organic or all natural soaps, but our soaps are vegan, as they do not contain animal products like milk or beeswax or honey at this time. We also buy from sources that claim to carry products that are ethically and sustainably sourced.
The main ingredients of our soaps are olive oil, organic and sustainably grown palm oil, pure coconut oil, castor oil, organic sweet almond oil, and lye (sodium hydroxide). These are natural in the sense that they can be found in nature and are not manmade. The fragrances and colorants we use are usually synthetic or man made. You just can’t get a cotton candy scented essential oil, and we might want to use one! The designs and fragrances we enjoy do not always lend themselves to essential oils, spinach power, and kaolin clay. That being said, our soaps do not contain harsh chemicals or preservatives that are often found in soap you buy at the store. So, are they all natural? No. Are they good for your skin? We totally believe so! This middle ground is something we feel good about and stand by. If you are looking for all natural soap, there are many soap makers who strictly use only all natural ingredients, and we totally understand if you choose to support them instead. We have offered a couple essential oil and all natural colorant soaps in the past and plan to offer a few in the future, but this is not our main focus at this time.  Our lotion bars contain beeswax, which is not considered vegan.

Is there lye in your soap? Isn’t that harmful/toxic/bad for me?

We do use lye (sodium hydroxide) to create our soap, as all soap is and has always been made from the saponification of oils and lye, either in sodium hydroxide form (bar soap) or potassium hydroxide (liquid soap). However, this very harsh and harmful chemical goes through a complete chemical change after it is mixed with the oils. This change is called saponification, and afterwards the oils and lye are no longer the same. They have combined into an entirely new chemical called SOAP! No free-floating lye is left if soap is made properly.
We also test the pH of each of our soap batches before we send them out to you to make sure that they have completely saponified and mellowed out to be mild and gentle on your skin. Your safety and comfort is our top priority!
